Bachelor Degree Course IT Systems Integration
The digital revolution is shaping our working environment. Enterprises and institutions are working more and more with IT and carrying out a major proportion of their business via modern information technologies. However, when two enterprises or departments are merged, we are faced with a communication problem. Not all IT systems are immediately compatible with each other. They must be aligned and linked with each other. This is where the field of systems integration comes in. IT systems integration functions as translator and takes care of networking, data security and the administration of complex information networks. Systems integration specialists must have an overview of existing systems and their method of operating and be able to harmonise these both in the programming language as well as in terms of norms and standards. Above all in the future, IT systems integration will shape the working environment in information technology.

Successful IT systems integration always comprises several aspects. On the one hand the technical realisation and integration of information systems and on the other hand organisational aspects and instructions for users. Teamwork is demanded of prospective IT specialists, as well as targeted management and social skills.
The University has set itself the objective of showing the students in its information technology courses how to work independently, responsibly and in a solution-oriented manner. Graduates of the course should be able to tackle complex questions and be prepared as thoroughly as possible for work in the field by means of a two-term project phase.
The Bachelor degree course in IT Systems Integration comprises:
-3-year full-time course
-Qualification as Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
-25 places per year
-Teaching language: German
-Two-term project phase integrated into the course
IT experts in systems integration are specialised in the linking of various software or hardware components. They must demonstrate a broad knowledge of the correlation and interaction between complex application systems. Most systems integration specialists work in software enterprises. Graduates in IT Systems Integration are qualified for the production of connections and the monitoring and organisation of projects. IT experts are needed in the networked working world in many sectors.
Only a few examples of tasks are given here:
-Development of infrastructures and system architectures
-Integration of new IT systems into existing systems
-Design of networks and databases, administration
Having successfully completed the Bachelor course, students with good results are at liberty to enrol for a Master degree course in an IT discipline. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences offers a Master degree course in Information Technology.
The Bachelor course in IT Systems Integration lasts six terms. In the first two terms, basic know-how in mathematics, business administration and the first principles of informatics, programming and software engineering are taught. This basic knowledge forms the platform for work in the subsequent terms.
In addition to informatics, technology and mathematics, the curriculum then encompasses data protection and systems integration. Legal principles concerning data security and project management are also addressed. The course contents become more specialised and consolidated and are targeted at the project phase in the fifth and sixth terms. In the project phase, students work on a practical project for two terms. The purpose here is not only to apply the skills learnt so far but also to train teamwork and project management. The Bachelor thesis marks the end of the course. Whilst working on their topic, students are accompanied and supported by a colloquium.

Comprehensive practical placements and exercises are foreseen in the course where students can directly put into practice the knowledge they have acquired and develop solutions for practical problems. In the two-term project phase, teams work on various themes. The topics might stem from enterprises in the region or from research. The work is presented to the public in the form of a project report and a presentation.
Research topics at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences in the area of information technology are: Information Mining, Environmental Informatics, Optimisation of Organisational Structures and Procedures, Internet Society, e-Government, Groupware Platforms, System Analysis, Compiler Construction, Database Development, Media Design, Multimedia Programming, Virtual Reality, Mathematical Simulation, SAP, Bluetooth Technology as well as Teleteaching/Telelearning.
Specialists in IT systems integration are in demand both in the regional employment market as well as at international level. Experience gained abroad and foreign language skills open up excellent opportunities for graduates in the global employment market.
Students from 66 countries are enrolled at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. This internationality is complemented by a wide spectrum of foreign partner universities with which co-operative research projects and student exchanges are carried out. Thus Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences co-operates with universities in Great Britain, Netherlands, France, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Russia and Thailand.
Students in the IT Systems Integration course are under no obligation to spend time abroad, however it is to be recommended and welcomed when they spend a term or complete a practical internship in another country. The International Office can provide information and advice for student enquiries regarding study or internships abroad.
Admission to the course is normally conditional on either a general or a subject-specific school-leaving certificate which permits admission to a university degree course. Information about the possibility of special admission conditions can be obtained from the Admissions Office of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. European and US American school-leaving certificates are generally recognised. It is recommended that non-German applicants submit their application to the ASSIST office for checking. Further information can be found under www.uni-assist.de.
Applicants with no previous relevant practical training are recommended to complete an internship prior to commencing the course. In addition, basic knowledge of English is a condition for admission to the course. Level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is expected (further information can be found under www.hs-bremerhaven.de/Sprachqualifikationen.html).
To apply for the IT Systems Integration course, applicants must complete in full the relevant application form and either submit it in person or send it by post together with all the necessary documents before the closing date to the Admissions Office of the University. The form can be obtained either from the Central Student Advice Office or the homepage of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences.
