Institute for Thermal Engines and Machines

The Institute for Thermal Engines and Machines (IWA) carries out primarily research and development projects in the field of ship propulsion and auxiliary machines. Thermal power generation plants, gas engines and wind energy plants are also the focus of the complex activities of the institute.

Activities of the institute include construction, operation, maintenance and repair of machines as well as the injury assessment. For this purpose, there are many testing equipments with modern measuring technology available: One set of ship main propulsion with diesel engine and auxiliary plant for thermal engines, a power generator with diesel engine and a steam generator with turbine, a rotaryand piston pump test rig, a hydraulic system and a cooling system as well as compressors. The good facilities are complemented by latest software for simulation of systems and components (including FEM: ABAQUS, flow simulation and dynamic simulation: AMESIM).

Offers of the institute are complemented by the technological counselling and trainings which considerably support the education of students with comprehensive know-how and research equipment.
