The Institute for Safety and Security Studies (ISaSS) at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is carrying out research in regard to maintain and improve safety in the public sector and in the economy. A special emphasize is put on risk analysis, risk management and prevention of hazards and threats caused by intentional actions (security) or without intent (safety).

The institute's research projects emphasize predominantly dangers and threats caused by current social developments. In recent years, the issues of immigration, digitalization and energy transition have been of particular importance. The projects at ISaSS do not only describe phenomenons, in addition they always deal with the causes and contexts of emergence. Due to the institute's connection to the Integrated Safety and Security Management Master program at the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, the institute's work also focuses on the practical application of scientific results. In this context, numerous partnerships with other research institutes, authorities and companies have been established and maintained.

Currently, new forms of preventing human trafficking and smuggling (based on the use of big data) are being investigated. The Institute's interdisciplinary research team includes security engineers, social scientists and criminologists.

ISaSS cooperates in the form of joint project activities with, among others, the European Forum for Urban Security (Efus) and the DLR Institute for the Protection of Maritime Infrastructure.
