There is hardly a sector which has as much as future potential as regenerative energies. With growth rates between 30 and 40 per cent, wind energy utilisation has become one of the most important economic sectors in that field. By 2011, over 100 000 people have already been employed in the German wind energy sector. As a result of the booming construction of off-shore wind farms in the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, more and more qualified engineers are needed especially in the coastal region to develop, design, erect, and operate these turbines and farms.
Responding to these developments and the significance of the sector for the region, the Master programme Wind energy technology of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven was set up. Based on a Bachelor study course which is related to the topic (e.g. Maritime technologies) the students are qualified to engineers who can understand the complex system of the ”wind turbine” as an entirety. Therefore, they can take on interdisciplinary tasks in the field of wind energy engineering both in technical and management positions. The modules are closely linked to each other. In the study course, topics such as aerodynamics, structures, dynamics as well as measurement and control techniques are dealt with. The students are familiarized with all aspects regarding wind energy technology. By going into depth in the area of simulation programmes as well as by introducing business management systems, the students are able to understand the turbine’s function. They will be able to transfer this knowledge into industrial projects contributing to its optimisation and further development.
Joint research projects of the Institute of Wind Energy (fk-wind:) with industry and other research partners, whose results are deeply integrated in the teaching, qualify the students also for applied researches and contribute to an intensive knowledge transfer between the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven and regional, national and international companies as well as scientific institutions. Especially through numerous exercises in laboratories and the internship, the students acquire important application-oriented skills. After graduation they are capable to contribute to the development of wind energy technology by using their specialised knowledge in the field of manufacturing, design and logistics or research and development. Last but not least, the interest of the private business in the northwest region in our graduates can be shown by their financial support: The company AREVA Wind GmbH is financing an endowed professorship with half a million Euro over five years, and a consortium consisting of three enterprises, Sparkasse Bremerhaven, Bremer Landesbank and Germanischer Lloyd, has provided for a second endowed professorship.
