Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences makes invisible work visible

University

"Care work concerns us all"

Briefly explained: Care work refers to all paid and unpaid, everyday, recurring work: be it raising children or caring for relatives. But also cooking, cleaning and household repairs. The Equal Care Day aims to make this mostly invisible work visible and raise awareness of it. Rebecca Brückner, Women's and Equal Opportunities Officer for the technical and administrative departments at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, is organising a pinboard with her team to mark this day of action, which will be set up in House K at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. With various facts and explanations, she wants to draw attention to the work that is usually neither seen nor recognised. Her two student assistants Selina Schmidt and Ayşin Önder have compiled the information material for this purpose. "Care work concerns us all and we should ask ourselves, where do I require it?" asks Rebecca Brückner. The next step is to think about how everyone can create more awareness for people who have to do care work. University members can also join in and pin their own experiences and comments on the pinboard. "How do you manage to share care work as partners? Have you been able to look at or implement the topic independently of cultural and historical developments and without prejudice?" asks Antje Wächter. The coordinator for health management and family friendliness at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has already organised several round tables in the past, including one on the topic of caring for relatives. The university also offers two family rooms where student parents can study and keep their children occupied at the same time. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is committed to reconciling studying and working with family responsibilities, which is why it has signed the "Family at the University" charter.
