"Koggethon" combines computer science and culture
Registration now open for event on 8 June
What do computer science and culture have to do with each other? What points of contact are there between computer science degree programmes and cultural institutions? Anyone interested in computer science can explore these and other questions together with teachers and students from the Computer Science, Business Informatics and Digitalisation, Innovation and Information Management degree programmes at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences at this year's "Koggethon" on Saturday, 8 June, from 6 p.m. at the German Maritime Museum (Hans-Scharoun-Platz 1 in Bremerhaven) all night long. Pupils from the 10th grade onwards as well as students and citizens interested in computer science are invited. Please register by 31 May, stating your name and age, at koggethon@hs-bremerhaven.de. Underage participants must bring a declaration of consent from a parent or guardian. Further information can be found at informatik.hs-bremerhaven.de/koggethon.
Teaching staff and students from higher semesters worked together with scientists from the German Maritime Museum to prepare the Long Night of Computer Science. "With the Koggethon, we want to give all participants their first insights into computer science and the use of algorithms, or new insights for those with experience, and to organise our cultural experience together in a pleasant and intensive working atmosphere with lots of fun. We want to show that programming is communicative and that computer science involves creative activities," says the organising team. Developing innovative ideas in teams, transferring them into models and exploring how they can be digitised and programmed using prototypes are typical approaches in computer science. Interested pupils in particular can also try this out at the Koggethon - supported by more experienced computer science students. The cog theme and the context of the German Maritime Museum also make it clear that the results of computer science can also be utilised for cultural purposes. Technology and cultural studies are moving closer together here in a very practical way.
The application phase for the winter semester 2024/25 is currently underway at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. Prospective students have until 15 August to apply for the open-admission degree programmes - including Computer Science, Business Informatics and Digitalisation, Innovation and Information Management - via the university's own application portal ecampus.hs-bremerhaven.de. Applications for the admission-restricted Bachelor's degree programmes in Digital Media Production, Physician Assistant and Social Work can only be submitted via the portal www.hochschulstart.de by 15 July.
