Joyful reunion at the first Alumni Homecoming Day
To mark the 50th anniversary of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, the Career Service Centre (CSC) invited former students of the university to the first cross-disciplinary alumni meeting.
At the fully booked Alumni Homecoming Day, almost 90 participants were delighted to see their old university and former fellow students again. The campus tours were particularly popular.
Much has changed since the first students left Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences with their degrees in hand at the end of the 1970s. Not only have new degree programmes been added, but also new buildings. At the Alumni Homecoming Day, graduates took the opportunity to look around their old campus. ‘The campus tours were really popular,’ says Alena Lobes from the Alumni Relations department, who organised the event together with her colleague Vivien Heinrich. One of the groups did not return until two hours later.
A panel discussion focused on the topic of ‘Shaping the future – generations in dialogue about technology, responsibility and sustainability’. The discussion centred not only on technological developments, but also on the social, economic and human dimensions of change. Alumni, students and lecturers discussed how innovation, corporate responsibility and social sustainability are intertwined.
In addition to the guided tours and the discussion round, the event offered plenty of time for networking over drinks and finger food. This was made possible by food donations from, among others, the fish delicatessen Abelmann, the bakery Engelbrecht and the Bremerhaven supermarket Edeka Knauer. The monetary and material donations were raised by Dr Helga Beste, head of the Third Mission department.
The German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven provided its premises as the venue for the evening event. This was well received by the alumni and the organising team. "The collaboration with the event manager was excellent, and it was gratifying to see how much the participants appreciated the venue. Some took their time to view the exhibition, while others bought souvenirs in the museum shop. Our photo booth was also in use throughout the day,‘ says Vivien Heinrich. Culinary delights were provided by the restaurant ’Zur Mühle‘ in Sievern. ’In the end, everyone went home happy," adds Vivien Heinrich.
