Periods are political
Reading and science slam with journalist Franka Frei at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences
Although around half of the world's population menstruates, periods are often considered taboo. In her book ‘Periods are political’, Berlin-based journalist and activist Franka Frei shows how this causes great harm. On Tuesday, 18 November 2025, she will be a guest at StuCa at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences (House K, An der Karlstadt 8) at 6 p.m. to read and discuss myths, shame and how deeply taboo is anchored in society, politics and the economy with participants. Participation is free of charge. Registration is possible until Friday, 14 November by emailing sisrael@hs-bremerhaven.de.
What do a German housewife, the Danish crown princess and an Indonesian factory worker have in common? They menstruate. At least potentially, because they belong to that part of the world's population that has a cycle. Menstruation does not stop at origin, religion or class. The fact that it is often taboo has far-reaching consequences for the environment, the economy and gender equality. In her reading, Franka Frei not only addresses the problems, but also presents solutions and activists. An important evening for anyone interested in breaking the taboo and learning more about the political dimension of periods.
