Open to All: University Highlights Its Inclusion Work

University

Action Day on Wednesday, 10 June, from 10 am to 2.30 pm

What does inclusion work look like at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences? What measures ensure that people with disabilities can also study successfully? And how do university staff work every day to make the campus accessible? The Accessible University Working Group will answer these and other questions at the ‘Open to all’ open day on Wednesday 10 June, from 10 am to 2.30 pm in the machine hall of building Z (Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, An der Karlstadt 8, Bremerhaven). Anyone interested is warmly invited to experience inclusion at the university first-hand. Further information is available at www.hs-bremerhaven.de/offen-fuer-alle-aktionstag.

The event begins at 10 am with an open lecture by the Social Work programme on the topic “Inclusion can succeed! Social support services for inclusion and participation”. This will be followed at 11 am by a screening of the student film “Autism at University” and at 11.45 am by a presentation of the podcast “HS inklusiv – Hearing Diversity”. At 1 pm, staff will present the digital, accessible wayfinding system. The day of action will conclude with an inclusive campus tour at 1.30 pm.

Under the motto “All Aboard”, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is committed to ensuring equal access and participation in everyday student life, and was awarded the “Shaping Diversity” certificate by the Stifterverband in 2024 in recognition of this work. The Centre for Equal Opportunities and Diversity and the Accessible University Working Group are committed, among other things, to breaking down barriers, for example through structural changes and individual advisory services.

A major step towards accessibility

Just in time for Diversity Day 2026, two new support systems at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences are ensuring that the campus becomes even more accessible. A digital wayfinding system now makes it easier to find your way around the campus. The new audio system improves the acoustics in the lecture theatres, regardless of where you are seated. Both innovations are designed so that it is not only students with disabilities who benefit from them. With these new services, the “University by the Sea” is a pioneer in the state of Bremen.
