‘Irreplaceable’ in the age of AI: Gallery 149 displays photographs by students from Bremerhaven

Studies

Human artistic intelligence  versus machine artificial intelligence

What significance will conventional photography have in the future? What will remain when images can be generated completely digitally in photorealistic quality for almost any subject area? Students in the Digital Media Production (DMP) programme at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences have been exploring these questions. The photographic results of their reflections can be admired in a photo exhibition from 31 January to 13 February in Gallery 149. The exhibition is open Wednesdays and Fridays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The vernissage will take place on 31 January at 6 p.m.

Students Julia Bulat, Nikolai Buß, Alex Cohrs, Katja Eßmann, Merle von Forstner, Lisa Gerdes, Svenja Haibt, Julie Martell, Sofie Mielke, Lenny Priewe and Sinem Özütemiz want to use their work to demonstrate what conventional photography can still achieve compared to artificially generated images. In addition to the final photographic results, the focus is always on authentic creative processes characterised by emotional depth, sensual engagement with self-chosen themes and creative intention. In the students' view, authenticity is and remains irreplaceable, even in the age of AI. They were supervised in their project by their lecturer Ralf C. Schreier.

In addition to the vernissage, there will also be a photographers' get-together on Thursday, 5 February at 6 p.m. and an artists' talk on Friday, 13 February at 4.30 p.m.
