Study programme

Computer Science Bachelor of Science

Apply now for the winter semester of 2026/27.

Study hands-on in an experimental learning environment

Our information society needs skilled computer scientists. As a small university in the state of Bremen, we can provide students with a solid foundation and diverse knowledge for developing high-quality IT systems in small groups, while also fostering teamwork. You will be prepared to collaborate on DevOps projects and gain an understanding of the connections between the development (Dev) of software systems in projects and the operational aspects of software systems (Ops). The triad of digital sovereignty, open source, and sustainability shapes the culture of the program and is a recurring theme throughout the course of study. Our technology labs provide opportunities for independent and experimental learning. Partnerships with regional companies offer you insight into various career fields—such as the diverse tasks involved in software development, the design and enhancement of IT infrastructures, or the specific requirements of different industries. An integrated semester abroad or internship allows you to gain international or professional experience.

Why choose this programme

  • Successfully starting the study programme in a team

Computer science and business informatics students begin their introductory phase together in interdisciplinary teams. Step by step, they are introduced to an open-source-based IT infrastructure, and starting with small automation tasks, they gradually develop a project as a team.
  • Digital Sovereignty - Open Source - Sustainability

A deep understanding of open-source software systems is at the heart of the computer science program. This forms the foundation for sustainable software development. Sustainability is further reinforced by building a working environment based on refurbished devices—from laptops to server infrastructure.
  • Play an active role in developing the culture of the study programme

In an extracurricular study group, students from all semesters work together with faculty and technical staff to further develop the open-source-based IT infrastructure and have the opportunity to contribute their own ideas and suggestions.

Software development in devops projects

Diversity of tasks

Computer scientists are involved in the design, implementation, and deployment of computer systems, typically addressing complex algorithmic, formal, or methodological problems. Their work encompasses system programming, the development of software tools, application programming, and the quality assurance of complex software systems. In this context, the relationship between the development (Dev) of software products and their operational management (Ops) plays a particularly important role. Given the ubiquity of information technology systems, there is no single “typical” industry for computer science. Rather, information technology systems are now used across all industries. They are also often the driving force behind innovation. For this reason, it is important that computer scientists, in addition to their own technical expertise, learn to familiarize themselves with the language and requirements of various industries.

Informatics is not just programming, but without programming, it is nothing Informatics

The strength of computer systems lies in their ability to process even large amounts of data systematically and at high speed. You will learn how they can be used to manage technical and business processes and support sustainable development. A solid foundation in mathematics is just as important as the development and evaluation of models and high-quality programming. We use open-source systems as a foundation to strengthen digital sovereignty and implement sustainable software systems. Through concrete examples, we explore the interaction between hardware and software in business applications, the Internet of Things, and complex IT infrastructures. The ability to work effectively in a team is an essential skill for future careers in computer science. For this reason, projects accompany students throughout their entire course of study, from the first semester to the last.

At night with a laptop in the museum

The computer science programme took over the German Maritime Museum for a whole night to work on exciting programming projects with beginners and advanced students. From Saturday to Sunday, the laptops were once again opened up in the museum's cog hall. The students, pupils and other interested parties built visualisations of the seabed, ship animations, a 3D TicTacToe and won points for researching security vulnerabilities in a web shop.

Bremerhaven computer science students present project work

Once again this year, the computer science, business informatics and computer science – trustworthy systems degree programmes invite all interested parties to ‘Computer Science Day’ at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. On Thursday, 29 January, from 9:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., student project work will be on display in the university's event room (Building T, Room 002, An der Karlstadt 8). This will be followed by Prof. Dr. Jens Hündling's inaugural lecture. Participation in the event is free of charge and no prior registration is required.

Small Robot Becomes Tourism Expert

How can humanoid robots be used in the tourism sector? Thirteen computer science and business informatics students tested this for the city of Bremerhaven as part of a course project. They recently presented their findings to their clients. “I always enjoy working with the university and the students and seeing the excellent results and their application in the city at the end. Thank you very much for the great work,” says Dr. Ralf Meyer, Head of the Department of Economy, Tourism, and Science in Bremerhaven.
