RoRo tractors are used to carry heavy loads in seaports and in industry (e.g. steelworks). A NOW study on the use of alternative drive systems for port handling equipment estimated GHG emissions of 155,000 tonnes for German seaports in 2021. An increase to more than 195,000 tonnes was forecast for 2040. Forklift and terminal tractor operations account for 19% of these emissions. Alternative propulsion technologies represent a key element in achieving the climate neutrality target for the ports of Bremen by 2035. In the DERo2 project, the Smart Mobility Institute at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is collaborating with the companies MAFI Transportsysteme and Atlantik Hafenbetriebe.
The main outcome of the project is the development of a digital decision-making tool which, among other things, allows the input of various operational parameters and, based on the findings from this project, delivers vehicle solutions with alternative drive systems that are precisely tailored to the requirements, as is already the case today in the field of waste collection vehicles, for example. The tool must therefore be capable of processing the parameters entered by the user – such as the typical operating conditions of a RoRo tractor unit, the loads to be transported, the required tractive force, the required continuous operating time, etc. – using decision-making logic.The decision-making tool is to be designed in such a way that it can also be used for vehicle solutions regardless of the specific port environment, and thus on a supra-regional basis.
The project investigates and compares four basic variants of alternative propulsion systems:
1) Battery-electric propulsion
2) Hydrogen-based propulsion (fuel cell; internal combustion engine)
3) Methanol-based propulsion (potential future fuel for shipping)
4) Hybrid solutions
The key parameter is, first and foremost, the system’s power output required for the respective application. A key determinant for the possible design is the available installation space in diesel-powered RoRo tractors. As manoeuvring often has to take place in confined spaces, the dimensions of the tractor are limited. Furthermore, the respective infrastructure requirements for loading or refuelling the alternative systems play a significant role.
