The field of Marine Engineering and Wind Energy is an interdisciplinary field of study that focuses on the development, operation, and maintenance of technologies for the use and development of the oceans. Students acquire in-depth knowledge in the fields of engineering, natural sciences, and maritime technologies to develop innovative solutions to the challenges of the marine environment.
In our modern world, life without electricity is unimaginable. The ocean is a versatile energy source that should not be underestimated, as it contains immense power that must be harnessed. This is already being done in offshore wind farms and will soon also be used in wave and current power plants. The extreme environmental conditions of the open sea place high demands on technology and maintenance, as well as necessitate new and further developments.
Marine Engineering and Wind Energy play a crucial role in addressing global challenges such as climate change, the sustainable use of marine resources, and the development of new, environmentally friendly technologies.

The internationally recognised Marine Engineering and Wind Energy specialisation builds on this principle and qualifies you as an engineer specialised in the application of cutting-edge maritime technologies with great development potential. Depending on your strengths and interests, you can create an individual subject profile in Marine Engineering or Wind Energy and choose between a more mechanical or a more electrical engineering specialisation. 'Learning by doing' is the key method: practical work in laboratory and project groups and excursions promote your independence alongside other students, as well as your team skills – important qualities for a successful career start.

Programme overview
The first two semesters lay the foundations of your engineering expertise allowing you to choose the specialisation Marine Engineerng and Wind Energy. From the third semester onwards, you can create your personal profile in the specialisation Marine Engineerng and Wind Energy with your choice of specialist areas by expanding your knowledge of electrical engineering and/or mechanical engineering more deeply, as well as starting your first project and contributing your own ideas. From the fourth semester onwards, you can choose between the subject areas of Marine Engineering and Wind Energy. The final semester is set aside for the professional practice phase and your bachelor's thesis. A variety of relevant practical exercises and practical placements form part of the curriculum. The study of Marine Engineering and Wind Energy promotes interdisciplinary work and networked thinking.
The key feature of the study programme in Marine Engineering and Wind Energy is its combination of the engineering and natural science expertise required for the exploration and commercial use of the oceans. Wind energy comprises the development, design and operation of offshore and onshore wind turbines and wind farms. In this course, you will develop an understanding of turbines as complete systems, plan and design wind farms, work on application-based tasks and gain offshore-specific expertise. Marine energy focuses on the use of renewable energy in the form of waves, ocean currents and tides. But differences in salt content and temperature also present enormous energy potentials. The required competences are developed in lectures, practical placements and projects.
In the professional practice phase in the final semester, you will gain familiarity with operational processes. During this phase, you will show that you can independently understand and work on complex processes. When choosing a company or a research institute, you should also already plan for your bachelor's thesis and complete both modules consecutively at one location. In this stage of your studies, it is also possible to complete the final semester doing your professional practice phase and bachelor's thesis abroad. However, some of your fellow students will also use the fifth semester for a semester abroad. The lecturers in the Marine Engineering and Wind Energy specialisation will be happy to advise you on individual solutions.
Admission and application
The prerequisite for admission to the study programme is a general higher education entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent. The Registration Office and the Student Advisory Service can provide you with information on the options for taking up studies without a higher education entrance qualification. If you have an educational qualification from a non-European country, your certificates must be presented for a preliminary assessment for recognition of the qualification at the UNI-ASSIST examination centre. You can find more information at www.uni-assist.de. In addition, you are expected to have very good German and good English language skills. An English language certificate is not required. However, the study programme also includes individual subjects where the language of instruction is English.
The Engineering study programme admits students in the winter and summer semester every year. The regular application deadline for the winter semester is 15 August, while the deadline for the summer semester is 15 February. Please apply online through our ecampus application portal where you can upload all the necessary documents.
The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is a member of UNI-ASSIST (Application Services for International Students). Prospective students who have gained their university entrance qualification outside the European Union (EU) can therefore submit their application directly to UNI-ASSIST. To ensure adequate processing time, the application for the winter semester should be submitted to UNI-ASSIST by 30 June. Following a successful review, this is forwarded on to the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. UNI-ASSIST charges applicants a fee to process the application.
