EcoMaterials: Sustainability. Raw Materials. Processes.

EcoMaterials: Sustainibility. Raw Materials. Processes. Institute

The Institute's research focuses on the sustainable processing and design of biomaterials and raw materials of animal, plant and microbiological origin. Our common goal is to develop biogenic raw materials for the production of alternative products in order to replace materials and chemicals produced from fossil raw materials on the market and to transfer them into a closed cycle.

Projects

ALBINA

The overall objective of the project was the substitution of mineral oil-based lubricant additives with microalgae-based compounds. The project aimed at identifying ingredients from microalgae, and further on proofing and demonstrating their potential for the use as lubricant additives in machining applications.

SerAZel

The objective of SeraAZel is the extraction of additives from red microalgae for serum-free cell culture. Algae fractions obtained are evaluated for mammalian cell cultures and bioactive fractions are further characterized and identified and will lead to the formulation of a serum free cell culture medium.

Sustainable packaging solutions from macroalgae for the food trade

MAK-PAK

The goal of the Mak-Pak project is to develop a sustainably produced, disposable and edible packaging solution as a presentation form for food in the out-of-home consumption and snack segment.

Optimization and validation of a fermented egg white product

OvoFerm

The aim of the project is to optimize the production of a fermented egg white product with a novel sensory character including ensuring textural and microbiological stability as well as up-scaling of the fermentation process.

Industrial-scale process optimization for the production of a sustainable packaging solution from macroalgae for the food retail industry.

Mak-Pak Scale-Up

The goal of the Mak-Pak Scale-Up project is to optimize the process for producing an innovative, sustainable, disposable and ideally edible packaging solution from macroalgae for industrial implementation.

Quality-oriented production control and optimization in the delicatessen industry

Manufaktur 4.0

The goal is to optimize delicatessen food production by improving quality-oriented production control using innovative digitization approaches (digital twin, AI), which leads to environmentally friendly effects (reduction of production waste, energy use).
