Academic Senate

The Academic Senate is the highest executive body at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. It presides over matters in its remit under the Bremen Higher Education Act. It may request information from the Rectorate and any of the organisational units on any matter concerning the university. It consists of 17 members: two deans, seven professors, four non-academic staff members and four student representatives. As a rule, the meetings are open to the university public.

Rectorate

The Rectorate is the governing body of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. It is responsible for all university matters, unless they expressly fall under the remit of a different authority. The current Rectorate consists of Rector Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Alexis Papathanassis, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Patrick Frohberg, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Rabea Diekmann and the Chancellor Alexander Mraz. The Rectorate is supported by Rector's Assistant Merle Pohlabeln.

Faculty 1

Faculty 1 "Technology" is responsible for the technical study programmes at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. This faculty offers ten bachelor's programmes, including Engineering, Renewable Energy and Environmental Technologies, Physician Assistant and Maritime Technologies, and five master's programmes, including Food Technology and Embedded Systems Design. Dean Prof. Dr. Günter Deiler and the members of the Deanery are responsible for the organisation of the teaching programmes and for administration.

Faculty 2

Faculty 2 "Management and Information Systems" is headed by Dean Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerhard Feldmeier. The nine bachelor's programmes include, for example, Informatics, Business Administration (also as work-integrated learning), Digital Media Production, Social Work, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Leadership, and Transport/Logistics. A master's degree can be obtained in Digitalisation, Innovation and Information Management, Integrated Safety and Security Management, and Logistics Engineering and Management.

Women's Representative Office

The Women's Representative Office (ZKFF) supports the university management in fulfilling its mission of increasing equal opportunities for women and men. The Academic Senate appoints the ZKFF on the basis of the Bremen Higher Education Act (BremenHG 2010, §6). The ZKFF develops proposals for the elimination of disparities for women in the scientific field and takes a clear stance on such issues with the relevant bodies at the university.

AStA

AStA is the Student Representative Council, which advocates for the interests of the students at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. The members of AStA are elected by the Student Council. This is also the controlling body of AStA. The elections take place annually. There are 12 areas of responsibility, which include the AStA chair, finance, sports, BAföG (student funding)/social affairs, public relations and culture. In addition to its involvement in university policy, AStA adds to the attractions of student life by organising parties, sporting events and cultural activities.

Digitalization

Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences relies on the demand for and promotion of IT use to achieve the goals of securing and expanding its competitive position and operational capability and, on the cost side, increasing economic efficiency. The IT penetration of the university structures will be increased in an appropriate, ecological and security-oriented manner and its performance and reliability will be carefully monitored and ensured. At the same time, the skills of employees will be expanded. Users are the focus of both efforts.

Sustainability

A sustainability commission is currently working on the university's sustainability strategy. All status groups are represented on the commission.

Internationalization

Research

Alongside teaching, research is an integral part of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. In its four research clusters, the university works on a wide range of topics that are geared towards the social challenges of our time.

Target agreements

Every three years, the university and the responsible authority in Bremen reach target and performance agreements with each other.

Strengthening the Future Contract for Studies and Teaching (ZuSL)

With the Pact for the Future as the successor to the Higher Education Pact 2020, the federal and state governments are jointly improving the quality of studying and teaching at universities - across the board and permanently. The details are set out in the implementation agreement between the responsible authority and Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences.
