CHE Ranking: Informatics at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences once again among the top group

Studies

Students realise a project right at the beginning

DIE ZEIT has published the latest results of the university ranking by the Centre for Higher Education Development (CHE). The Bachelor's study programme in Informatics at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences once again achieved a place in the top group. According to the results of the survey, students are offered very good contact with professional practice and very good support at the beginning of their studies. This year's survey covered the subjects of computer science, medicine, political science and sociology at more than 300 universities. According to the current CHE ranking, satisfaction with the general study situation in the federal state of Bremen is above the national average. 67 per cent of all departments assessed at universities in the smallest federal state received at least four out of a maximum of five stars. The complete university ranking is now available at https://studiengaenge.zeit.de/ranking.

With around 120,000 students surveyed, the ranking is the most comprehensive and detailed comparison of universities in the German-speaking world. In addition to facts on the areas of study, teaching and research, the ranking includes students' judgements of their universities. The results of the student survey on the general study situation are presented using a 5-star scale. The study conditions in general and the specific criteria of skills development, orientation and support during studies, practical elements and practical exchange were assessed.

Students gain a comprehensive insight into the professional field in the first semester

At Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences, the introductory phase of the Computer Science and Business Informatics degree programmes was redesigned some time ago - in response to the increasingly heterogeneous entry requirements of first-year students. "Experience in recent years has shown that first-year students only have a very vague and often incorrect idea of what a career in computer science entails," explains course director Prof. Dr Karin Vosseberg. In order to counteract this problem and at the same time promote motivation to study, those responsible have decided on a new approach: The introductory phase of the degree programme is designed in the form of a project in which students work in independent teams of six to eight people to solve a given task as a team. They are guided in small steps. "Our aim is to introduce students to a diverse range of careers in computer science with its broad spectrum of tasks by the end of the first semester and to introduce them to a typical working environment for computer scientists," continues Prof Vosseberg. Excursions to companies, where students get to know different professional fields, are also part of the project.
