First Bremerhaven student receives scholarship from the Kieserling Foundation

Financial support ensures successful studies

In times of rising prices, many students also face financial challenges. Those who are not entitled to BaFöG or cannot be supported by their family have to work alongside their studies. In the worst case scenario, this double burden can lead to students dropping out. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has now been able to award a scholarship from the Bremen Kieserling Foundation to a motivated logistics student for the first time. Mufti Haeruddin Hasan can now look forward to financial support for his studies. ‘Thanks to the Kieserling Foundation, a young student on the Logistics Engineering and Management Master's programme can be helped to complete his studies quickly and promptly,’ says programme director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carsten Dorn.

As a recent analysis by the Federal Statistical Office shows, only around 15 per cent of students receive funding under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BaFöG). Instead, more than a third are in gainful employment in order to raise the money for rent, food and semester fees. This leads to a great burden and, in the worst case, to dropping out of university. Scholarships can help here. They are usually awarded to particularly motivated and committed students. The awarding guidelines are determined by the foundations themselves.

Mufti Haeruddin Hasan also faced the challenge of financing his studies himself. As an international student without a German passport, he cannot apply for BaFöG. He therefore works to earn a living. This is a problem for his academic performance: due to his working hours, he is unable to attend his courses regularly and therefore cannot complete his coursework in the allotted time. "The result is basically part-time study with a significantly longer study period. And the final thesis cannot be completed properly due to the situation. This jeopardises the student's academic success," explains Prof. Dorn.

Thanks to the Bremen-based Kieserling Foundation, the university is able to help its students. The foundation finances scholarships for motivated students on the Logitics Engineering and Management Master's programme who are having difficulties with their studies for financial reasons. "Mr Mufti Haeruddin Hasan has successfully completed his Bachelor's degree at Bremen University of Applied Sciences and would like to deepen his knowledge with the Master's in LEM. After graduating, he would like to work in logistics in Germany and, in particular, later implement and organise logistics value chains between Germany and Indonesia. He has convinced us that he will successfully complete his studies with financial support. We are therefore delighted to be able to award him a scholarship," says Prof Dorn.

The Bremen-based Kieserling Foundation is committed to transport and logistics issues. The purpose of the foundation is to promote science and research, education and upbringing as well as youth welfare. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has received funding to support needy students on the Logitics Engineering and Management Master's programme.
