Loneliness in Generation Z is to be made visible

A project team from the ‘Digital Media Production’ degree programme at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is currently working on a documentary film about the growing phenomenon of loneliness in Generation Z. The students are looking for people in the Bremen and Bremerhaven area who were born between 1995 and 2005 and are willing to talk openly about their loneliness in front of the camera. Loneliness is a universal feeling that everyone has probably experienced to varying degrees. Various studies show that this painful phenomenon has intensified in recent years, particularly among teenagers and young adults, and is increasingly perceived as a silent crisis. This is why the Bremerhaven project team has now made this the subject of their new documentary film.

The film, with the working title ‘More than alone’, tells the personal stories of those affected and shows how the deeply felt sense of loneliness is an essential part of our networked society. Empathetic portraits of young people who deal with their isolation in different ways are intended to make the emotional depth of this feeling tangible. ‘In addition, experts shed light on the social and psychological background to loneliness,’ says programme director Prof. Dr Holger Rada, explaining the concept. The aim of the film is to remove the taboo surrounding the phenomenon of loneliness.
