Get to know sign language on Diversity Day

To mark the 30th anniversary of the Language Centre, we are sharing an announcement from the University of Bremen: As part of the anniversary, there will be an open afternoon of language learning with workshops, language cafés, photo activities and information stands at the Bremen City Library headquarters on Saturday, 24 May. The SZHB, the Goethe-Institut, the Instituto Cervantes and the Institut Français will be presenting their programmes and inviting visitors to join in. There will also be an event at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences in May: on Diversity Day on Tuesday, 27 May, the SZHB will be offering a taster course in German sign language. On Saturday, 21 June, Claudia Harsch will be speaking at the Haus der Wissenschaft in Bremen as part of the ‘Knowledge at 11’ series on the topic "Is my B1 your B1? Or what it means to be at language level B1". Further events are planned at colleges and the university over the course of the year.

Over 20 languages on offer

For 30 years, students at the University of Bremen, Bremen University of Applied Sciences, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences and the University of the Arts Bremen have been able to choose from over 20 languages every semester - from Arabic to Korean, from German as a foreign language for incoming students to Italian for outgoing students, from ‘English for Logisticians’ to ‘Polish for studies and jobs’. In addition to curricular language courses, the SZHB also offers numerous free language courses that can be incorporated into the General Studies programme, as well as a wide range of courses for self-directed language learning. Employees from all areas also benefit from the wide range of courses on offer. The SZHB supports academics with individual language coaching, for example when writing publications.
A special feature of the SZHB is its close cooperation with the renowned cultural institutes based in Bremen: German courses for international students and visiting academics are offered in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut, Spanish courses by the Instituto Cervantes and French courses by the Institut Français.

An important contribution to academic mobility

The core task of the SZHB is language teaching. At the same time, however, the SZHB team of almost 70 people offers much more, including the development of curricula, the taking of recognised language examinations and the promotion of multilingualism. As an important component of the universities' internationalisation strategies, the SZHB makes a significant contribution to academic mobility and the intercultural opening of Bremen as a university location.
‘Our wide range of services, which are aimed at students, academics and administrative staff, shows the important contribution the SZHB makes to studies, research, labour market preparation and international cooperation,’ says Prof. Dr Claudia Harsch, Academic Director of the Language Centre.
