Benefits for employees

Moin!

Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences offers its employees a wide range of attractive benefits. Please feel free to browse this page for more information or contact us directly. You will find our contact details at the bottom of the page.

Campus life

At the university, everything is conveniently close by, much the same as it is throughout Bremerhaven itself. The campus we share connects us and promotes communication among us. Our campus is centrally located near the city centre and only five minutes away from the dyke. The Geeste river also flows directly alongside the university, so we can clear our heads with a walk along the water or stroll through the shops in the city centre.

Culinary needs

Our employees' culinary needs on campus are served by our canteen and cafeteria, which offer food, drinks and snacks at reduced prices. In our student café (StuCa – run by the AStA), you can grab a coffee and chat with colleagues or students in a cosy atmosphere. A vending machine provides drinks outside opening hours.

Mobility

Sustainability matters to us. Thanks to its central location, our campus is easily accessible by bike and public transport. As a certified bicycle-friendly employer, our university offers a self-help bicycle repair shop, lockable bicycle boxes and company bicycles. A free employee car park is also available in the immediate vicinity of the campus.

Health

Our employees' health and well-being are a top priority, which is why we subsidise fitness programmes through the Egym Wellpass as part of the workplace health management. In addition, we offer an 'Active Break' once a week and encourage free participation in health seminars. Height-adjustable desks and other amenities create an ergonomic and comfortable workplace, with an ergonomics consultant regularly providing advice in this area.

Flexibility

We support flexible working hours and work locations to the extent that public sector guidelines allow. For example, some of your working hours can be spent working remotely. Opportunities for part-time work and parental leave are standard practice for us. Employees can also apply to take sabbatical leave. In individual cases, we can look for customised solutions. Moreover, as stipulated in the collective agreement, they are entitled to 30 days' holiday and additional days off at Christmas and New Year.

Onboarding

New employees receive thorough onboarding to ensure a good start at our university A welcome bag containing small gifts and information brochures will be handed out upon arrival. For all further important information, there are resources such as the university navigator, which provides an index of all essential topics to get you started. In addition, for the first few months a mentor is assigned to the new employee, and there are regular lunches for informal exchange.

Lifelong learning

At our university, employees benefit from extensive internal and external professional development, including initiatives provided by the state of Bremen. Internal programmes include team development and management coaching. All employees are also entitled to use the library. Through a current project, we offer counselling for doctoral students and other specific topics. Professional and personal development in the academic world is also possible, for example through research semesters.

Salary & security

We pay an allowance towards our employees' capital-formation contributions and offer an additional pension scheme via the supplementary pension agency VBL. As is customary in the public sector, our employees benefit from a transparent salary structure with regular pay rises and additional payments in line with collective agreements, as well as long-term employment security. Remuneration is based on the collective agreement for the public sector in the federal states (TV-L).

Diversity & inclusion

Promoting equal opportunity is a fundamental aspect of our university, our personnel development and our quality management. With above-average numbers of women in science and administration, including in senior positions, we demonstrate our commitment to incorporating diverse skills, perspectives, values and norms into our work. We offer a free programme as part of our social and family counselling services and in addition, the Staff Council is always available to address the concerns of our employees.

Togetherness

We are guided by clear values: passion, community and responsibility form the basis of our work. Personal, appreciative and open – this is how our more than 250 employees interact within the team, with their superiors and with each other. Together, we form a strong university community: colleagues in administration and technology, teachers and researchers work together in a friendly and informal atmosphere. We work together in a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere and value a family-friendly environment. Breastfeeding and family rooms are available to help employees balance professional and personal responsibilities.

Events

We offer our employees opportunities to connect outside the workplace through regular events, such as Christmas parties and the annual Kohltour – a traditional North German group hike during the kale harvest, featuring abundant food and drinks, and often including games along the way. The individual teams at our university also organise smaller-scale activities from time to time, such as summer parties. Moreover, the General Student Committee (AStA) organises regular events to which the employees of our university are also invited.
