Information for refugees

WELCOME - Studierende engagieren sich für Flüchtlinge

Within the DAAD program "WELCOME - Studierende engagieren sich für Flüchtlinge" (WELCOME - students get involved with refugees), a project at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven got granted for the integration of refugees (who have the ability/requirements to study). This program is financed through the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

The University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven offers, in cooperation with the student initiative "Bunt am Meer" (colorful at the ocean), assistance for refugees with an academic background who intend to study at the University in Bremerhaven. Aim of these measures is the professional, linguistical and social integration of the target group into the university and the local social life.

Refugees interested in studying are informed about the various opportunities to expand their knowledge or the aim to study fulltime at the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven.

As auditors, refugees can attend lectures of their preferred degree program and participate in German classes offered by the university. Furthermore, the following actions are undertaken within the framework of the project:

  • student buddy program
  • activities to get to know the new environment
  • individual companionship and counseling
  • and much more

The measures are offered in addition to the already existing events for international students at the university. Those existing events, like the International StuCa or excursions, are also offered for refugees with an acedemic background in order to support their integration into the everyday university life.

Characteristics of this project can also be found on the homepage of the DAAD.Further information about programs and measures for refugees at universities can be found here. Information for refugees who want to study in Germany can be found on the pages of the campaign study-in.de.

TestAS and onSET for refugees

The TestAS is an assessment test that examines both the general and subject-related abilities for academic studies. It assists refugees in continuing or starting academic studies in Germany. The test can be done country-wide on specified testing dates.

The online language placement test onSET addresses refugees who want to do a language course before continuing or starting their studies in Germany. Registered refugees can take the test free of charge - in German (formerly onDaF) or in English.

Further information about TestAS and onSET can be found on the respective homepage and in the following video.

German classes for refugees

The student initiative "Bunt am Meer" offers, since the beginning of the summer term 2016, German language courses for refugees. One of the main focuses of these courses is to become more comfortable with the German language in everday life situations.

More information about the courses can be found in this article of the public relations department of the University of Applied Sciences Bremerhaven.
