After completing their degree, graduates will have received the best possible preparation for their career with in-depth research activities and specialist knowledge and skills. Structure of the programme: The first two semesters are dedicated to the foundations of engineering and natural sciences, which are applied to the area of food in supporting exercises and internships. The specialisation phase is introduced in subjects such as microbiology, food chemistry, food technology, food marketing or the foundations of logistics/materials management. Students can select from the food technology and food economics fields of study. The fourth semester is dedicated entirely to professional practice. Students are given the opportunity to gain an insight into their future profession in various food companies both in Germany and abroad. The seventh semester covers project management and human resource management before starting the bachelor’s thesis, which students can work on in collaboration with a company.

The Food Technology/Food Economics (Lebensmitteltechnology/Lebensmittelwirtschaft) bachelor’s degree programme is unique in Germany's university landscape, thanks to the mix of technology and economics. Before starting the third semester, students decide on a focus area: Food Technology: Process engineering, food chemistry and analysis, microbiology, automation, packaging technology as well as product technology of foods of an animal/plant origin are covered in theoretical and practical components during the programme with special fields such as sausage and meat products, bread and baked goods, confectionery, fruit and vegetable products, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages or fish and seafood products. The specific system engineering skills are acquired and applied with practical examples in the laboratory exercises. Food Economics: In addition to further education and training in special food technology disciplines, the focus is on food economics and management training. Food marketing, investment and financing, controlling, human resources, logistics and project management are covered in the context of the food industry and case studies in seminars are used for practical implementation.

Professional practice phase in semester 4. The fourth semester is dedicated to a six-month professional practice phase in companies in the food industry. A period abroad is also possible during the professional practice phase. Students may switch internships once during the professional practice semester to give them an insight into two operations (e.g. 3+3 months or 4+2 months).

Admission to the programme requires a general higher education entrance qualification, an entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences or an educational qualification recognised as equivalent. The Registration Office and the Student Advisory Service can provide information on the options for studying without a higher education entrance qualification. The admission requirement for foreign students is an C1 language level in German. Basic knowledge of English is a prerequisite for the study programme.

The Food Technology/Food Economics (LTW) study programme admits students in the winter semester every year. The application deadline is 15 July. Please apply online through our ecampus application portal where you can upload all the necessary documents.

The Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is a member of UNI-ASSIST (Application Services for International Students). Prospective students who have gained their university entrance qualification outside the European Union (EU) can therefore submit their application directly to UNI-ASSIST. To ensure adequate processing time, the application for the winter semester should be submitted to UNI-ASSIST by 30 June. Following a successful review, this is forwarded on to the Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. UNI-ASSIST charges applicants a fee to process the application.

We recommend that applicants without any specialist education or training complete an internship before starting the study programme. This allows students to gain practical experience in the subsequent field of study and work early on, which provides good orientation for the Food Technology/Food Economics (Lebensmitteltechnologie / Lebensmittelwirtschaft) study programme.
