Welcome party and tips for starting the studies

Welcome on board: Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences celebrated the start of the 2025 summer semester together with its newly enrolled students. This year, the traditional English-language welcome event once again offered numerous tips for a successful start to your studies. ‘Have fun and enjoy your time, but don't forget what you're there for: to study. Take responsibility, contribute to the community and you will be successful. We are really looking forward to having you with us in the coming years. Let's make your time at university a special experience,’ said Rector Prof. Dr Dr Alexis Papathanassis in his welcoming speech.

The most important information has been compiled at orientierung.hs-bremerhaven.de to ensure a smooth start to your studies. Students can find links to timetables, service centres and the Elli learning platform as well as informative video tutorials. Support is also provided by various student initiatives, some of which presented themselves at the welcome event.
Franjo Gießel, who is responsible for multimedia in the committee, spoke about the tasks of the General Students' Committee (AStA). He said that the AStA assists all students with questions and problems. The student representatives also regularly organise events. The ‘Queer Students’ group and the Queer Feminist Committee, represented by students Ruby and Franzi, also regularly organise events for queer and questioning students, such as the queer regulars' table.

Ulrich Kameni Ngango Veigne and Lea Kristin Kuhlmann welcomed the first-semester students on behalf of the Local Erasmus Initiative (LEI). This initiative supports students from abroad with everyday questions and organises events where they can exchange ideas with each other and with their German fellow students. Aleksandra Rupietta, Head of the International Office, presented the other programmes available to international students and the opportunities that all students at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences have to spend time abroad.
Board member Ulf Abbes spoke on behalf of the Verein zur Förderung der Hochschule Bremerhaven e.V.. The association has been supporting students since 1978 and, among other things, honours the three best theses each year with a sponsorship award. This year, all first-year students will once again find a mug sponsored by the association in their ‘goodie bag’.

Anika Lange, a member of staff at the International Office, moderated the English-language welcome event. Afterwards, the students took the opportunity to make initial contacts on guided campus tours and to deepen these contacts at an evening event in the canteen.

As of 1 April 2025, 183 students have enrolled for the summer semester at Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. Compared to the summer semester 2024, enrolments have thus increased by almost 30 per cent. Looking at the entire academic year 2024/25, Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has recorded almost 14 per cent more enrolments. The international Master's degree programmes Embedded Systems Design (ESD) and Process Engineering and Energy Technology (PEET) are also in particularly high demand this summer semester.
