Formal Senate reception for Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences
Hochschule Bremerhaven wird zum Jubiläum mit Senatsempfang geehrt
The university in Bremerhaven is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, the Senate of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen invited Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences as well as other universities in the state, politicians and members of society from Bremen and Bremerhaven to a festive Senate reception. Around 200 guests attended and honoured the achievements of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences to the excellent musical accompaniment of students from Bremen University of the Arts.
"Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is firmly rooted in the city. The skilled workers that the region will need tomorrow learn here," said Senator for the Environment, Climate and Science, Kathrin Moosdorf, recognising the work of Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences. "The university has always understood how to adapt to the times and the respective requirements and to provide impetus. From the very beginning, the sea and marine technologies have been central here at the mouth of the Weser. This makes Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences very important for the entire science centre in the state of Bremen. I sincerely wish Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences all the best."
"The university is young because it is ready to continue growing and learning"
University Rector Prof. Dr Dr h.c. Alexis Papathanassis emphasised that Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is ‘50 years young’: "Half a century in which a visionary idea has grown into an institution that today enjoys recognition far beyond the region as a “university by the sea”. The longevity and continued success of an organisation is based on its ability to learn. Not as a rigid institution, but as a living system. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is 50 years young - not old. Young because it is ready to continue growing, developing and learning. It will continue to play a central role in the development of the city in the future, as an educational institution, innovation centre and cultural meeting place."
Martin Günthner, City Councillor for Social Affairs, Labour, Youth, Family and Women, offered his congratulations on behalf of the city council: "For the city of Bremerhaven, the university is an important pillar of social life, scientific expertise and part of the solution to the shortage of skilled workers. The graduates of the university enrich the city and our region with their expertise even after graduation, they help shape the city with their student life and work. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is therefore a figurehead for the city on the one hand and a driving force for our urban development on the other. On behalf of the city council, I would like to congratulate the university on this special anniversary."
Thorsten Rönner, Vice-President of the Bremen and Bremerhaven Chamber of Industry and Commerce, recognised Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences as an ‘important partner for the economy’.
Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences was officially founded on 1 September 1975. But its history goes back further: the Navigation School was founded in Bremerhaven as early as 1879, followed by the Municipal Technical Centre in 1884. They are the forerunners of today's university, whose degree programmes are still largely maritime in nature and which focuses on the sea as a resource and economic sector. The focus is on sustainability. The geographical location on the Weser estuary also contributes to the maritime profile of the ‘University by the Sea’. Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences is represented on the research map of the German Rectors' Conference with three research specialisations: energy and marine technology, life sciences and tourism and management. Bremerhaven was among the first universities nationwide to offer the ‘Physician Assistant - Medical Assistance’ degree programme. In total, almost 3,000 people from over 80 nations study in Bremerhaven on more than 20 innovative and modern degree programmes.
Bremerhaven University of Applied Sciences has traditionally focussed on practical training for its students. It is characterised by close cooperation with other academic institutions as well as with companies in the region. It also has a high level of research and third-party funding in the fields of life sciences, renewable energies, management and logistics. Through co-operation with industry, the transfer of scientific knowledge into real applications is very successful. This makes Bremen University of Applied Sciences an important driver of innovation for companies and creates added value and careers in the region.
